Fallingwater & Bedford Springs Resort

Sunday, September 7 – Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Enjoy three days, two nights at the Bedford Spring Resort in Pennsylvania, a National Historic Landmark. Closed for two decades, the 203-year-old hot-springs resort in the Allegheny Mountains reopened in July 2007 after a $120 million restoration. The guest rooms embrace the richness of the resort’s past, featuring authentic patterns and textures, and include a 32” flat-screen HDTV. Amenities include a $1.5 million outdoor pool and mineral springs-fed indoor pool, high-speed and wireless Internet access throughout the property and fitness center. Traditional English tea is served daily at 4 p.m.

We will visit Fallingwater, recognized as one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most acclaimed works. It is a supreme example of Wright’s concept of organic architecture, which promotes harmony between man and nature through design so well integrated with its site that buildings, furnishings and surroundings become part of the unified, interrelated composition. It was designed in l935 for the Kaufmann family of Pittsburgh.  We will also visit Kentuck Knob designed by Wright in the last decade of his career. This deluxe Usonian is nestled high in the Laurel Highlands. Constructed of tidewater red cypress, glass and 800 tons of native sandstone with a copper roof, the home embodies Wright’s principles of organic architecture as well.

Staatsburgh (formally known as the Mills Mansion), A Beaux Art Mansion in the historic Hudson River Valley & lunch at Escoffier at the Culinary Institute of America

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Enjoy an autumn drive up through the Hudson River Valley to the Culinary Institute. Before lunch, we will have a short opportunity to shop.  A classic French cuisine lunch will be served in the Escoffier dining room.  After lunch and a short ride, we will have a guided tour of Staatsburgh, a state historic site (continuing restoration on the exterior). This 1985 elegant estate was the home of Ogden Mills, a successful financier and philanthropist and his wife Ruth. The mansion of 65 rooms and 14 bathrooms was lavishly decorated in the 17th and 18th century, French style; and the exterior was a product of the New York prestigious architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White. It has an interesting history and was a famous setting for spectacular parties and dinners for New York’s social elite.

We have chosen a menu of Salade Aida (greens and veggies), Filet de Boeuf en Croute (beef tenderloin in pastry with potatoes and seasonal vegetables) and Mousse aux fruits (fruit flavored mousse). Any dietary restrictions should be noted upon registration and a vegetable or pasta dish will be substituted.

NOTE: Staatsburg is partially accessible to those with mobility limitations.

The Cloisters & The Boathouse Cafe in Central Park

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Join us for a guided tour of the Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of Medieval Europe, located in northern Manhattan, high on a hilltop overlooking the Hudson River. Opened in 1938, this modern structure was built in a medieval style that incorporated portions of original medieval chapels, monastic cloisters, a chapter house and other architectural elements dating from the twelfth through the fifteenth century. The Cloisters Collection also includes tapestries, frescoes, stained glass, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, metal work and panel paintings.

We will have lunch at the Boathouse Café, a famous icon of Central Park, overlooking the lake. Around 1874, Calvert Vaux designed a two-story boathouse at the eastern end of the lake. Here visitors can purchase refreshments, take boat rides and watch other boats. After this wooden Victorian structure with sloping mansard roof burned down, the current Loeb Boathouse took its place in the l950s.

Depart: 8 a.m.

Return: 5 p.m.

Members: $125.00

Non-members: $135.00
