Paul Cézanne’s retrospective at the Salon d’Automne in 1907 was a watershed event in the history of art. The immediate impact of this large presentation of his work on the young artists of Paris was profound. Its ramifications on successive generations down to the present are still in effect. This exhibition will feature forty paintings and twenty watercolors and drawings by Cézanne, displayed alongside works by over a dozen artists—from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso to Ellsworth Kelly and Jasper Johns—whose work reflects, both visually and poetically, Cézanne’s extraordinary legacy. Enjoy a memorable lunch on the Moshulu, one of the world’s grandest tall ships. Chef Ferrandez, a New York native, was formerly at the Pierre Hotel in New York and the Four Seasons in Houston.

Join us for a unique day of art, literary achievements and humanitarian causes. We will visit the James A. Michener Art Museum and have a highlight tour of its world-class, Pennsylvania Impressionism collection, as well as other special exhibits, interactive galleries and a sculpture garden. We will then travel to nearby Bucks County to the Pearl S. Buck House, where we will enjoy a traditional Chinese luncheon buffet served in the Cultural Center.
Lastly, we will have a docent tour of the Pearl Buck House on the 19th century farm (Green Hills) where this fascinating author (having lived in China for 42 years) lived for the next 40 years. Here she wrote many of her 100 novels and children’s books and non-fiction while raising seven adopted children and caring for many others. In 1932 she won the Pulitzer Prize for The Good Earth and in 1938 she was awarded the Nobel prize in literature for her epic portrayal of Chinese peasant life. In addition to her literary achievements, she was a driving force for several humanitarian causes—an advocate of cross-cultural understanding and racial harmony as a means of achieving world peace.
We must have 25 people for this tour, but we can go up to 40 people. Make your reservations by March 16, 2009. The Chinese lunch contains no MSG and no peanut oil. There are some stairs in the house tour, but the cultural center has a ramp. The Michener Museum is fully accessible.

Join us for a guided tour of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the largest of the 12 regional banks in the system. The system acts as the central bank of the US and is responsible for regulating the flow of money by setting interest rates, overseeing the regulation of the banking industry, and providing banking services to the federal government. Approximately one-third of the world’s supply of gold bullion is stored in a vault 80 feet below ground level.
We’ll have lunch at Fraunces Tavern, where in 1783 General George Washington gave his farewell address to his troops. After lunch we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the art and architecture of Trinity Church, one of the oldest churches in the United States. The city of New York was just beginning to flourish in 1697 when the Church received its first charter. The brilliant architect in charge of the design was Richard Upjohn, founder of the American Institute of Architects. There will be time to visit St. Paul’s Chapel on your own.

While having lunch at the Water’s Edge Restaurant, enjoy the spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline. The Museum of the Moving Image is located in one of the original studio buildings of the Astoria Studio which is presently one of the largest motion picture and television production facilities in the United States. The Museum advances the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. There will be a docent-led tour.

Join us for a three-course gourmet lunch at the Grist Mill Restaurant in the Riverview Dining Room overlooking the Farmington River. Later, we will visit and tour the Hill-Stead country estate, built in 1901 by Alfred Pope and designed by his architect daughter Theodate Pope Riddle, as a retirement home. In addition to its beautiful gardens and landscaping, there are 19 rooms filled with an amazing private collection of Impressionist paintings, prints, sculptures and furniture, including works by Degas, Monet, Cassatt, Whistler and many others. This exhibit never travels so this is the place to see it!
The group is limited to 35 people. Please reserve your space by April 2009. The first floor of the estate is accessible. For those in need, they provide some portable stools for the tour. Grist Mill Restaurant is accessible and dietary needs can be met if notified prior to arrival.
