Spark!Lab, the flagship educational initiative of the Smithsonian, is a hands-on invention workspace where visitors can learn about and engage in the history and process of invention. Spark!Lab offers an informal approach to ignite ingenuity with compelling and open-ended challenges.
As the only Smithsonian affiliate in New Jersey, the Morris Museum is proud to share the Smithsonian’s cutting-edge resources with other educational institutions. One of ten Spark!Lab sites in the nation, this dynamic learning space inspires your group to create, collaborate, and innovate- and makes every visitor an inventor.
Know Before You Go - Spark!Lab FAQs for Group Visits
Spark!Lab was designed by the Smithsonian with children ages 5-12 in mind. However, inventors of any age are welcome! Our activities are designed to be approachable for younger inventors, as well as complicated and stimulating for older inventors. Because there is no one correct way to approach an activity or solve a challenge in Spark!Lab, you get to decide the level of complexity.
If you choose to include Spark!Lab in your educational group visit, your group will participate in a series of our most popular Spark!Lab activities and work together to solve problems and create at each one. For example, your group will have the opportunity to design, test, and tweak a flying invention in our motion-activated Vertical Wind Tunnel.
Spark!Lab Ambassadors will be supporting your group during your time in Spark!Lab. Our Ambassador team, made up of staff and volunteers, is trained to facilitate (not teach or instruct) and encourage inventors to work through challenges to meet their desired objective. An Ambassador will start by introducing Spark!Lab, and will then divide everyone into smaller groups to begin activities.
As Spark!Lab is a hands-on experience, we do our best to ensure our space is healthy and safe for visitors. Upon entry to Spark!Lab, we offer hand sanitizer to those who are interested. We also ensure that Spark!Lab is cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis.
- Photos and videos are permitted in Spark!Lab. We encourage cellphones for the use of documenting your experience in Spark!Lab and capturing your inventions!
- If you are sharing your Spark!Lab photos to social media, feel free to tag the Morris Museum, and follow to keep up with the latest information and updates. Find us @morrismuseum on Facebook and Instagram.
