W. Carl Burger

(1925 – 2023)

This exhibition, mounted in memory of W. Carl Burger, highlights examples from the museum’s permanent collection featuring pieces in his most recognizable style – abstract expressionism. The exhibition will run through March 2024 in honor of the late artist’s persisting legacy and impact on both the museum and New Jersey arts.

During his 75-year artistic career, he produced an extensive body of work in a wide range of mediums which has been featured in many of our special exhibitions, including 2020’s retrospective, W. Carl Burger: Mastery of the Medium. He has entrusted this legacy to us by generously gifting more than 150 of his paintings, drawings, collages, and prints.

A graduate of New York University, Carl completed graduate work at Columbia University, the Arts Students League, and Rutgers University. His art has been exhibited nationwide at New York’s National Academy of Design, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the New Jersey State Museum, the Newark Museum, the Noyes Museum, and the Morris Museum; he even exhibited at the 1946 World’s Fair as part of the New Jersey Pavilion. In addition to this prolific career, Burger served during World War II with the U.S. armed forces in France and Germany.
