10th Annual Highlands
Juried Art Exhibit
On View October 20, 2023 – November 26, 2023
The Highlands is a geophysical province, a component of the Appalachian Mountains, spanning western Connecticut, southern New York, northern New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania. In New Jersey, the region has an astonishing diversity of landscapes. The NJ Highlands includes the rolling farm fields of Warren and Hunterdon counties, communities along the Delaware River, a vast, ecologically healthy forest rich in biodiversity to the north of highway I-80. Both rural and urban communities are rich in pre-Revolutionary history.
Several factors have protected these landscapes from the uncoordinated development that much of New Jersey has experienced, including the passage of the 2004 Highlands Act, the state’s focused investment in Highlands open space and historic and farmland preservation, and the century-old development of reservoir systems which serve New Jersey’s eastern cities. The natural settings of the Ramapo Mountains that once inspired artists of the mid-nineteenth century Hudson River School look very much the same today – just one example of the incomparable natural beauty protected in the NJ Highlands. The Annual Highlands Juried Art Exhibit is a celebration of the region’s natural beauty and the artists who are inspired by it.
