Five Standout Objects from Japan
The Museum invited Post-war Japanese art expert Midori Yoshimoto to select and interpret a range of Japanese works in our care. This collaboration offers an opportunity to celebrate Japanese culture, deepen understanding through scholarly expertise, and invite engagement with the museum’s distinctive holdings.
Since 1920, Community members have donated more than 250 Japanese cultural objects to the Museum. Often these objects were more characteristic of folkways than masterpieces. Then, beginning in the 1960s, the Museum received an influx of culturally significant gifts. These include richly decorated garments and accessories along with domestic objects such as writing boxes, Kokeshi dolls, Noh theatrical masks, and decorated fans.
