Description

Art and technology are seamlessly combined in the Murtogh D. Guinness Collection of historic mechanical musical instruments and automata. Automata are dolls or figures that come to life through mechanized movement. They are the precursors to things like robots or animatronics that you would see at an amusement park! The musical machines on display are the first examples of “music on demand” which transformed many aspects of human life, including how we enjoy music and art.

After highlighting several of the 150 extraordinary objects on display in the Guinness Collection, students will get to experience the kinetic motion of a modern automaton created by a living artist.

Following the tour, groups have the option to participate in a guided art activity. With inspiration from the past and present, students are given the tools to combine art, engineering and technology to create their very own automata.

Groups have the option to participate in a guided art activity where they can implement the techniques that have inspired them. This experience is for all ages.
