World Premiere: The multi-racial, mixed-media artist traces her ancestors’ life stories and lays bare the intergenerational trauma spawned by the Atlantic Slave Trade. This documentary short film has been nominated for a 2025 NAACP Image Award in the Outstanding Short Documentary category.
The first screening will be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers and special guests.
About Sonia Kennebeck
Sonia Kennebeck is an award-winning director, writer, and producer. Her directing credits include critically-acclaimed feature films Reality Winner (SXSW 2021), Enemies of the State (TIFF 2020), and National Bird (Berlinale Special 2016). Her work screened worldwide at major festivals and in theaters, and has been widely distributed through Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, PBS, Comcast, New York Times OpDocs, and others. Sonia is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She received a Chicken & Egg Award, the Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award, Ridenhour Documentary Film Prize, and an Emmy nomination. Her work has been supported repeatedly by most major film foundations, including Sundance Institute, Firelight Media, International Documentary Association, and the Reva & David Logan Foundation.
About Danielle Scott
Danielle Scott is a mixed-media assemblage artist who grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her work expresses politically and socially charged messaging. Scott was featured in the 2021 Essence Magazine as one of the top LGBTQ artists to look out for. Her art has been acquired by The Newark Museum of Art, author Roxanne Gay, and The Weissman Family Collection. Her work has been exhibited at The Monmouth Museum, Morris Museum, Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora, and The Every Women NYC Biennial. Danielle’s work has been internationally exhibited in Paris during Africa Week and will be part of the Havana Biennial in Cuba in 2024. Danielle was an artist in residence at Chateau Orquevaux in France, American Schools of Angola in Luanda, MECA College of Art and Design in Portland Maine, and ESKFF at Mana Contemporary in Jersey City. She was commissioned by the city of Newark to create several Public Art murals and the Limited Edition Newark Library card. She has received Visual Artist of the Year from ESKFF and the City of Jersey City. Danielle was taught and mentored by the late Jack Whitten when she attended the School of Visual Arts.
